The Benefits of a Morning Routine

My morning routine is a part of my day that impacts the rest of my day, so I truly cherish it. I start with making a cup of coffee (of course), reading and meditating on a few verses from the Bible, praying, and writing in my journal. I finish my routine with a thirty to sixty-minute workout.

A consistent morning routine makes me better equipped to handle everything I encounter daily. My morning routine is something I look forward to, and I believe it makes me a better person. Studies have shown that having a good morning routine can positively affect productivity. I’ve noticed that when I miss my morning routine, by waking up late or due to other circumstances, it shows in my mood and productivity that day.

By having a morning routine, you prioritize your self-care and mental health early in the day, enabling you to serve everyone in your life better and more effectively. Your morning routine doesn’t have to be extravagant or take long to complete. It should be a routine that lets you begin your day in a way that establishes the tone for the rest of the day.

I love what Charlie Evans says about the morning routine on The Science of People website:

Our morning routine sets us up for success, and we should all be starting our day the way we intend to carry it on—whether that is energized, relaxed, productive, slow, organized, or rested.
— Charlie Evans, Science of People

Three ideas of what to include in your morning routine

Here are some ideas of what you could include in your morning routine.

Exercise in the morning

Exercise has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. It has helped me through some very dark times. I exercise daily and use it for mental and physical health. I have it as a part of my morning routine to stay consistent with exercise. Morning exercise can be a significant part of a morning routine; it boosts energy to start the day. Once you begin a morning exercise routine, you may look forward to doing it each morning.

Follow a Bible reading plan

Something that has helped me to read the Bible more consistently is following the reading plans in the Bible App, so I’ve made this a part of my morning routine. The Bible App offers plans with encouragement and scripture to help you through all seasons of life. Reading the Bible as a part of your morning routine is a great way to start the day with encouragement and hope.

Spend time journaling

Journaling has been a part of my morning routine for many years, and I have benefited mentally and emotionally from keeping a journal. Journaling helps me process my thoughts and feelings by putting them on paper. Sometimes, when I’m stressed or overwhelmed, I grab my journal and write out everything I think and feel. I usually feel better afterward and have more peace and clarity. Journaling is an excellent way to start the morning.

I hope you found this helpful, that it encouraged you to start a morning routine and gave you some ideas of what to include. Please let me know in the comments what your current morning routine is like if you have one. I’d love to know.
